POKEMON HEARTGOLD AND SOULSILVER WALKTHROUGH
Ilex Forest
With Bugsy defeated, you may now leave Azalea Town and enter Ilex Forest through the town's western outpost. Before you have to chance to do that, however, your Rival will come up and challenge you to a rematch. You can actually trigger the second battle with your Rival anytime after clearing Team Rocket out of Slowpoke Well. Your rival has caught two new Pokemon and evolved his starter in the time since your first battle, but he shouldn't be hard to defeat if you've already beaten Bugsy.
Rival begins with Gastly, which shouldn't cause you too much trouble because its strongest attack is Lick. While Gastly's Mean Look/Curse combination can be annoying, it takes out half of Gastly's HP and non-Normal moves such as Thundershock, Rock Throw or Ember will beat it from there. Rival's Zubat is nothing new, as it can be defeated with Mareep, Slowpoke or just about anything else that has an attack. Wooper, Slowpoke, Geodude or Onix work well against Quilava; Bellsprout or Mareep will handle Croconaw, while Ekans, Zubat or any of the early Bug Pokemon can beat Bayleef. After the battle, your Rival will leave and you can enter Ilex Forest.
Welcome to Ilex Forest, the game's second mandatory dungeon-like area. Unlike Virdian Forest in Kanto, Ilex Forest is rather dark, likely due to the thickness and density of the forest's trees, and wild encounters can happen wherever you walk. Unlike in GSC, however, some light will shine into the Forest during the day. This is the first place in the game where you can find two Grass-type Pokemon: Oddish, who eventually evolves into either Vileplume or Bellossom, and Paras, who can be useful as an in-game catching assistant due to its ability to learn Spore naturally. Anyway, head north and speak to the boy that you'll see standing near a Cutable tree. He'll explain that his boss' Farfetch'd have run off into the forest and then ask you to help bring the two Pokemon back.
Hunting down Farfetch'd is a bit more complicated than it was in GSC; for one thing, you have a second Farfetch'd to return. To accomplish this, you have to sneak up on Farfetch'd and simply talk to it from behind, at which point the Pokemon will be automatically returned to the employee. The twist is that if you step on the piles of twigs on the ground, Farfetch'd will be alerted and turn to face the noise. You'll have to step on the first pile of twigs that you'll see, but you can use this to catch the first Farfetch'd by going around the small group of nearby trees and coming up behind the duck. To catch the second Farfetch'd, you'll have to chase it to the nearby northeastern corner that has three different piles of twigs; use these piles to trick Farfetch'd into turning toward a direction that lets you sneak up behind it.
After catching both Farfetch'd, the boy's employer will show up. To show his gratitude for finding his Pokemon, you'll receive HM01 - Cut, which allows you to Cut down small trees like the one you're standing in front of right now. Because the employer actually makes Charcoal in Azalea Town, you can go back to the house in town that has a chimney to receive a free Charcoal, which boosts Fire-type attacks by 20%. You can give this to Quilava for now if you have it.
Otherwise, teach Cut to one of your Pokemon (Oddish and Paras can both learn the move) and continue through the Forest. The first thing you'll notice is the shrine to Ilex Forest's protector, Celebi, but this is a glorified decoration and you can keep going north. Once you approach the lake, you can go to a dead-end to the southeast and find a hidden X Attack. Continue up a little for an Antidote sitting in plain view on the lake's edge. A bit north of the man standing near some trees is a hidden Super Potion. After this, you'll see another Kimono Girl standing near an Ether on the ground. She is lost, so she'll perform a dance and ask you and your Pokemon for help out of the forest. Answer yes and your Pokemon will hop around and then she'll find her way out.
From this point, there's a split in the way. Left is a straightforward path that leads to the exit of the Forest, while going right takes you around to forest to that man near the trees. He is actually HeartGold and SoulSilver's first Move Tutor and will teach one of your Pokemon Headbutt, which is a decent in-game move that can cause opponents to flinch; it also can be used to knock Pokemon out of certain trees, like the ones around the forest. You can talk to this Move Tutor again to teach Headbutt to multiple Pokemon. After that, leave through the left path from earlier. In the outpost, speak to the woman with a Butterfree at the counter to receive TM 12 - Taunt and then head into Route 34.
Route 34
The most notable aspect of Route 34 is the Breeding Center, which is where Mr. Pokemon received the Egg that hatches into your Togepi. As you approach the Center, an old man will be waiting for you and then your friend and Marill will talk to him. It turns out that your friend is actually the grandchild of the couple who runs the Breeding Center, so s/he'll introduce you to the family and explain the purpose of the building. The Breeding Center serves as a Daycare for Pokemon but, when two Pokemon of different genders and the same Egg Group are stored here, they can produce Eggs much like Togepi's. See the breeding guide for more information. You'll also receive the phone numbers of both members of the Daycare Couple in your phonebook.
Ditto, the king of breeding, is conveniently one of the new wild Pokemon found on this Route; Ditto can produce eggs with any other Pokemon that can possibly breed, so it's a valuable Pokemon to track down. There are also two new Psychic Pokemon to find here: the offense-oriented Abra and the defense-oriented Drowzee. The six Trainers on this route (a Youngster a Rattata, two Spearow and a Sandshrew; another with a Mankey and Diglett; a Picnicker with a Bulbasaur and two Hoppip; a Pokefan with a Snubbull and Mareep; a Camper with a Psyduck; and, at night only, a Policeman with a Growlithe) all have much weaker Pokemon than Bugsy or Rival, so use this opportunity to strengthen some of your weaker Pokemon. The Picnicker will ask for your phone number; occasionally, she might call for a rematch and give you a Leaf Stone, so it might be worthwhile to befriend her. Make sure to grab TM63 - Embargo, which halts the opponent's use of items, and then continue into Goldenrod City.
Goldenrod City
Goldenrod is Johto's largest city and, as such, there's a lot of things to do; first, heal at the Pokemon Center. Immediately to the right of the Center is Goldenrod's Department Store, which actually looks a little small on the overworld. If you take the elevator to the store's basement, you can find an Ether, Burn Heal and Ultra Ball on the floor, although your access to these items depends on how the Machoke workers have shifted the boxes for that day. Check the accompanying Pokemart table for each floor's item listings; you might want to buy some powerful TMs like TM38 - Fire Blast and TM52 - Focus Blast, which is useful against the next Gym Leader. On the fifth floor, you'll find a man who wants to trade his Machop for your Drowzee; you may want to partake in this trade to make an upcoming Gym match easier.
Also on the fifth floor, every Sunday a woman behind the counter will give you TM 27 - Return or TM21 - Frustration based based on the happiness of your leading Pokemon; the power of these moves depends on the happiness of the user. On the top floor, you can buy some drinks like Fresh Water and Lemonade that function like Potions; you can also pay $300 to enter a raffle that results in random prizes like TMs, a Luxury Ball or Berries including Persim and Chesto Berry. The Goldenrod Lottery is the only place in the game where you can find TM40 - Facade, a Normal-type move that doubles in power when the user has a status condition.
East of the Department Store is a woman who will rate the happiness of your leading Pokemon; see the happiness guide for more information. Just south of her is the Bike Shop. Because the store's owner just moved here from Kanto, he'll give you a Bicycle to advertise the shop; after riding your Bike enough, he'll call to say that sales are up and let you officially keep the bike.
Just north of the Pokemon Center is the Goldenrod Game Corner, where you can buy Coins or win them through the slot machines (Japan only) or the new Voltorb Flip minigame (outside of Japan), which is similar to Minesweeper. Unless you're playing the Japanese version, a man inside will give you a Coin Case; otherwise, you'll have to find one, so continue down the street to the left of the Game Corner. You'll pass the house of Pokemon storage system creator Bill, who isn't home right now, and find a building at the end of the street. Your friend appears inside to give you the Fashion Case and then leaves, so continue down stairs. This is the Goldenrod Underground, which has four easy Trainers: a Pokemaniac with two Slowpoke, another with a Lickitung, a Super Nerd with three Magnemite and a Voltorb, and another with two Grimer. Conveniently, a Coin Case is sitting on the floor for players of the Japanese version to take as their own.
The Goldenrod Underground also has three different shops that are open on different days of the week. One of the Haircut Brothers will offer to groom one of your Pokemon each day except for Monday; the younger brother is there on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, while his older brother shows up on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. During the weekend, an old woman will be selling you inexpensive herbal medicine, but these healing items will lower your Pokemon's happiness greatly; finally, on Monday mornings, another man will be selling discounted items that you can resell to Pokemarts for a small profit. Also, in the northeastern corner, you can get a picture of your character dressed like a Rocket Grunt and surrounded by your current team. Leave to the northwest.
You'll emerge next to an odd tent, which is home of Goldenrod's Name Rater; he can rename any Pokemon that you've caught yourself. Just south of this is the non-functional Magnet Train station and the Goldenrod Radio Tower, where you'll spot a Rocket Grunt spying. Go inside and take a quiz from the rightmost woman at the counter (answering "yes, yes, no, yes, no") to receive the Radio expansion card for your PokeGear, which lets you listen to Johto's different radio shows and, as a result, change the music of your current location. A nearby girl, who happens to be Goldenrod's Gym Leader Whitney, will be impressed that you passed the quiz and she'll return to her Gym as a result. This counter is also the place to go to receive prizes from the Lucky Number show if you have a winning number. On the second floor, speak to DJ Buena to receive a Blue Card, which lets you play the Buena's Password game everyday to earn points for prizes such as Pokemon vitamins.
A bit left of the Radio Tower is the Global Trade Station (GTS), which is where you can go to request Pokemon trades with other real-life players via Wi-Fi. Now you can head over to the Gym, which is right of the Name Rater's tent.
Unlike Azalea, Goldenrod City's Gym hasn't changed much in HGSS. The maze of items from GSC has become a raised 3D platform that forms the outline of a Clefairy. While the Gym now looks very festive and feminine, it shouldn't be too hard to navigate; to access Whitney, you need to get to the center of the ground floor by going up the first staircase, across upper path on the Clefairy-shaped platform and back down to the other side of the Gym. There are four Junior Trainers inside, all of whom are female Trainers who use cute, unevolved Normal-type Pokemon: a Beauty with three Sentret, a Beauty with two Meowth, a Lass with a Snubbull and a Lass with three Jigglypuff. These are all basically filler matches for experience; the real threat of this Gym is Whitney. When you're ready, talk to her to start the battle.
| Goldenrod City Gym: Whitney Speciality: Normal | Pokemon | Information | Moves |
| | Level: 17 Type: Normal Item: No Item Ability: Cute Charm | DoubleSlap Mimic Encore Metronome | |
| | Level: 19 Type: Normal Item: Lum Berry Ability: Scrappy | Rollout Attract Stomp Milk Drink | |
| Like Falkner and Bugsy, Whitney's roster remains unchanged in HeartGold and SoulSilver but, unlike others, her team's strategy and overall difficulty has not. Clefairy, like Pidgey and the cocoons before it, is basically a filler Pokemon that boosts Whitney's ranks; you shouldn't have any trouble taking her down. The real challenge, of course, is Miltank. Whitney's Miltank was one of the most hated in-game Pokemon in Gold and Silver, and it's just as annoying in HGSS: it still tries to annoy you with Attract and Stomp's flinchax, it still has Rollout to bulldoze your Pokemon, and it still knows Milk Drink to regain health, but an added irritation is that Whitney's Miltank has the Scrappy ability so it can hit Ghost-type Pokemon with Normal-type moves, i.e. Stomp. Scrappy removes Gastly's major trump card, its Normal-type immunity, against Whitney. Still, because the AI is stupid, Gastly's combination of Hypnosis and Curse works well (be warned that Miltank is holding a Lum Berry). Bayleef and Croconaw players can stick with their starters if they're strong, but Quilava will have trouble against Miltank's Rollout. Onix and Geodude are still good choices, as they resist all of Whitney's attacks unless Clefairy gets lucky via Mimic or Metronome, and, if you catch a female Drowzee on Route 34, you can trade for a female Machop at the Department Store; this gives you a Pokemon with a type advantage against Whitney who isn't affected by Attract. | |||
When she is defeated, she'll still cry and refuse to recognize her loss until you try to leave. She'll then give you TM45 - Attract, which inflicts Attraction on opponents of the opposite gender of the user, and the Plainbadge, which raises the Speed of your Pokemon and allows you to use Strength outside of battle.
Now that you have three badges, go into the flower shop next to the Gym. The girl inside will mention that a suspicious tree is blocking off Route 36 and, suspecting that the tree will react to water if sprinkled, she'll give you the Squirtbottle. Heal your Pokemon and leave through the northern outpost; inside is a guard who will ask you to bring a piece of mail, held by his Spearow, to a sleeping man on Route 31. This is a optional sidequest, and you can even keep the Spearow for yourself and give his friend another Pokemon holding the mail, but you'll receive TM 44 - Rest from the sleeping man and an HP Up from the guard after completing the delivery. Whether you accept the sidequest or not, leave north to reach Route 35.
